Each pulse of the laser sends light energy into your skin. We use different wavelengths of light to treat different colours of ink in your tattoo. When the ink particles absorb this energy, they instantly shatter into tiny fragments. Your body’s immune system then works to remove the ink by flushing it away from the tattooed area. We see the result of this as the tattoo lightening. in appearance.
Laser tattoo removal typically does involve some level of discomfort. That being said, many of our clients say that it hurts a lot less than expected! Many common descriptions include the sensation of a rubber band pinging against the skin. It may be uncomfortable, but is bearable.
The number of sessions needed will rely heavily on certain factors i.e. size, ink colours & amounts, location on body, skin type and even pre-existing scarring. All of this can be looked at and discussed at your consultation.
TAG Laser Clinic recommends at least an 8 week period between your sessions. This enables your body to have a stronger opportunity to absorb the shattered ink fragments and particles.
Side effects are an expected part of the tattoo removal process for most patients. In fact, some side effects are an important part of the body’s immune response that helps eliminate ink from the skin. The most common side effects are:
– Redness
– Tenderness
– Swelling
– Bruising
– Scabs
All of these side effects are temporary. Blisters can form within 24 hours of treatment and can appear large and may look alarming – this is completely normal! Scabs, bruising and blistering may take up to a week or so to heal.
Laser tattoo removal should not be carried out on pregnant women, if you have active skin infections or open lacerations in the treatment area.
